The story for Uzumaki originated when Ito attempted to write a story about people living in a very long terraced house, and he was inspired to use a spiral shape to achieve the desired length. The series tells the story of the citizens of Kurouzu-cho, a fictional city which is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals. Viz Media then published the volumes from October 2001 to October 2002, with a re-release from October 2007 to February 2008, and published a hardcover omnibus edition in October 2013. In North America, Viz Media serialized an English-language translation of the series in its monthly magazine Pulp from February 2001 to August 2002. In March 2000, Shogakukan released an omnibus edition, followed by a second omnibus version in August 2010. Appearing as a serial in the weekly seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999, the chapters were compiled into three bound volumes by Shogakukan and published from August 1998 to September 1999. Tomie is also good though is slightly more sexual and bloody in nature.
For any teen looking for horror in formats other than movies, I would highly recommend anything by Ito. Each chapter draws the reader into the madness that the main characters and eventually the whole town experiences. There aren’t any sexual instances but a woman is drawn naked in one of the chapters. There are no real language issues, but the illustrations and content are extremely graphic, especially for black and white illustrations.
This manga is very dark and most definitely for older teens and adults.
The curse caused by the spirals changes humans into slugs, causes pregnant women to murder and eat others, and hurricanes to target individuals. Kirie and Shuichi start to notice a strange pattern, spirals, cropping up everywhere and causing individuals and even natural weather events to act strangely. The whole tome is broken into chapters that follow Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, and at times her family, as their small town in Japan slowly “spirals” out of control. Ito’s Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is a classic horror manga for older teens and adults.
